Grant Application Process
To ensure a smooth application process, please follow these steps:

- Create an account or log-in to existing account.
- Create your profile.
- Complete the online application.
We understand that many organizations operate across multiple sectors, so we encourage you to select the pillar that best aligns with your primary focus.

Eligibility Guidelines
Grant Application Window
You may submit grant applications throughout the year between January 1 and December 15; they are assessed and granted quarterly according to the schedule on this page. Once an application has been submitted, applicants will receive award notifications via email on the specified date. The status of an award can also be viewed at any time by logging into your user-generated profile.
- CORE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
- Must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or a registered Canadian nonprofit in good standing.
- Operate within proximity to a Sun location.
- Organization's core goals and mission are aligned with at least one of Sun's focus pillars.
- Demonstrate a clear strategy to accomplish your mission through the proposed program, funding, and anticipated outcome within your application.
- Complete an anti-discrimination attestation within the online application portal.
- Exclusions
Please be aware that the following entities are excluded from consideration.
- Individuals or for-profit organizations.
- Political groups or causes/activities.
- Sports and race teams or athletic competitions.
- Faith-based organizations for religious purposes. Consideration will be made for the following:
- Faith-based organizations applying for funding to support programs that are open to all individuals and benefit the community at large. The program must also serve a secular purpose that the organization doesn't use to promote any religious beliefs, such as operating a food pantry.
- Organizations that support activities conflicting with Sun's policies, values, culture, and ideals, or engage in controversial tactics or activities.
- Organizations that primarily function as membership organizations, including alumni foundations, athletic funds, fraternities and sororities, labor unions, or trade associations.
- Organizations that do not attest to the anti-discrimination step within the portal.
Please ensure your application meets the criteria outlined above before proceeding with your submission. Any applications that fall under these exclusions will not be considered for a grant. Sun reserves the right to determine whether any organization is ineligible.

- Where do I apply for a Sun Unity Program grant?
Organizations can apply online anytime between January 1 – November 15 each year. Applications are reviewed and awarded on a quarterly basis.
- Who can apply?
Organizations who meet the following criteria are welcome to apply:
- Must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in the U.S. and Canada in good standing with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
- Operate within proximity to a Sun location.
- Aligning with at least one of Sun’s focus pillars.
- Are there organizations or causes that the Sun Unity Program grants will not fund?
The following organizations are eligible for Sun Unity Program grants:
- Individuals or for-profit organizations.
- Political groups or causes/activities.
- Sports teams or athletic competitions.
- Faith-based organizations for religious purposes. Consideration will be made for the following:

- Organizations that primarily function as membership organizations, including alumni foundations, athletic funds, fraternities and sororities, or trade associations.
- Organizations that do not adhere to and attest to the anti-discrimination commitment within the portal.
- Is a nonprofit still eligible to apply for funding if a sun team member is on staff, or if someone is on the board at Sun?
We are proud to have our team members working with the nonprofit organizations they care about and encourage you to apply. We do ask this is disclosed during the application process, however, specifically in the section about team involvement.
- How much can be requested in grants through the Sun Unity Program?
Sun currently awards grants in amounts ranging from $1,000 to $20,000.
- Can I speak to someone from the Sun Unity Program team regarding my open application?
Team members of the Sun Unity Program are available to answer process-related and technical questions. To promote an equitable process, however, the team cannot offer support on individual applications. These questions can be sent to sununity@suncommunities.com.
- Can my organization submit multiple requests if they relate to different programs we offer?
Organizations are permitted to submit up to one grant application each calendar year.
- How will I know my application has been received and is under review for consideration?
You will receive an email confirmation and can log back into the profile you created to view the status at any time throughout the process.
- How are funding decisions made for grants?
All grant requests are reviewed by the Sun Unity Steering Committee, a group of diverse team members varying in background, position level, department, and geographic location. Once reviewed by the committee, recommendations are sent for final review to the executive leadership team. The review process considers several factors inclusive of, but not limited to, eligibility, budget, alignment to Sun's pillar focus areas, feasibility of project plan, and anticipated impact.
- How will I know if my organization has been awarded a grant?
You will receive an email either way based on the award schedule below. You can also view your status at any time throughout the process when you access your account.

- If my organization is awarded a grant, when should we expect to receive the funding?
Once an award notification is received and the grantee completes all payment information, they can expect to receive funding within four to six weeks. Grantees can view check status within their portal profile at any time.
- Is there a reporting requirement if a grant is received?
Grantees are required to complete a post-award report within 12 months of receiving their award. We know nonprofit partners are busy serving communities and have ensured reporting meets our requirements, while allowing simplicity and efficiency.
- If my organization was not selected to receive a grant, are we eligible to reapply?
Yes, applicants are encouraged to re-submit if organization eligibility was not the reason for the declined application.
